ABSTRACT
This article analyzes the functioning of Svalbard, a dependent territory with
a unique status. It also presents the origins of the current relationship between Svalbard
and Norway and the reasons for the involvement of modern states in activities in this
territory. Furthermore, an attempt is made to examine the functioning of both local and
central government in Svalbard, as well as Norwegian policy towards the archipelago.
The analysis also covers contemporary challenges that are important for maintaining the
current status of this dependent territory.

Czasopismo naukowe «Studia Politologiczne» uzyskało dofinansowanie z Ministerstwa Edukacji i Nauki w ramach programu „Rozwój Czasopism Naukowych” (projekt numer RCN/SN/0713/2021/1). Wysokość otrzymanego dofinansowania wynosi 79 607 zł. Celem projektu jest realizacja działań zmierzających do podniesienia poziomu praktyk wydawniczych i edytorskich, zwiększenia wpływu Czasopisma na rozwój nauki oraz dalszego zwiększania prestiżu Czasopisma w międzynarodowym obiegu naukowym. Okres realizacji projektu wynosi 24 miesiące.
