Between Confirmation and Promulgation:
the “Ancient” Justification for Republican “Golden Liberty”
in Krzysztof Hartknoch’s De Republica Polonica

In Krzysztof Hartknoch’s work entitled De Republica Polonica, evolutionarily
shaped customary laws smoothly merge with the granting of rights by the king, together
producing a comprehensive justification for the “golden liberty” of the nobility. These
idioms generate anti-absolutist political and legal rhetoric, similar in nature to the English
narrative of the “ancient constitution.” In proving this thesis, the author begins with
the origins of freedom and its essence as a political phenomenon. He then discusses
methods of researching the “ancient constitution” and elements of this narrative present
in Hartknoch’s work.
