The article concentrates on the problem of republican nostalgia which is
approached as one of the characteristic symptoms of late modernity crisis. Highlighting
the durability of republican pattern it raises at the same time doubts which are contained
in the notion of “conditions of possibility”. The doubts are related to the visible tensions
between republican hopes and the failures of consensus politics, losing ground under
growing pressure of social unrest and ideological conflicts. The basic question is following:
is political change – embracing the notion of common sense – at all possible in the world
driven by the energy of disruption.
