Brussels bureaucracy, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the Ventotene
Manifesto, today seeks to dismantle nation-states and create a European superstate.
However, these efforts face resistance from political forces that view Europe as a community
of sovereign states. The arguments used in this debate show a striking similarity to those
expressed 250 years ago during the debate over the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
In particular, the arguments of the Anti-Federalists can today serve as an inspiration for
those opposing the federalization of Europe. The author of the article attempts to highlight the similarity between the situation of the United States during the ratification period and
today’s European Union, and to demonstrate the relevance of Anti-Federalist arguments
in the debate over the future of the European Union.
